Charles D. Owen High senior Jordan Robertson spent this past summer in Washington, D.C., as one of only two students representing North Carolina in the Bank of America Student Leaders program.
Jordan earned the competitive opportunity through an extensive application process that included essays about leadership, recommendations from school and community members, and a passion for serving others. The program began with a seven week internship at OnTrack WNC, a nonprofit in Asheville that provides financial education and counseling. There, Jordan gained hands-on experience in everything from content creation and grant writing to outreach. Through community events, Jordan saw firsthand the difference nonprofits make in people’s lives.
The program concluded with a week in Washington, D.C., where Jordan joined over 300 other Student Leaders from across the country. From debates and simulations to seminars and presentations, each activity challenged Jordan to think deeply about leadership and public policy. Exploring the Capitol Building, Library of Congress, national monuments, and museums made the experience even more meaningful.
“Through this program, I learned the value of mentorship, community service, and the power of even small acts of leadership,” Jordan shared. “I encourage other high school juniors and seniors to apply - the people you meet and the growth you experience are absolutely worth it.”
