Does it Matter lab

DOES IT MATTER?

Essential Standard

6.P.2.3 Compare the physical properties of pure substances that are independent of the amount of matter present including density, melting point, boiling point, and solubility to properties that are dependent on the amount of matter present to include volume, mass and weight.

Power point I use before the lab. Matter

The purpose of this lab is for students to explore which properties of matter the amount of matter matters, as in affects it. The properties that are explored are density, melting point, boiling point, solubility, volume, mass and weight.

The amount of equipment needed will depend on how you want to conduct the explorations. As a class, in groups of two or in groups of 4.
A general list:
computer and internet access
lab sheets
beakers
burners
hot pads
thermometer
ice cubes
triple beam balances
rubbing alcohol
water
Epson salt
sugar
oil

The amount of time it takes to conduct the lab depends on how long your class periods are. Mine are 45 minutes. I take 3 days to do the explorations and 1 day for them to finish answering the questions.

The explorations:
boiling and melting
solubility density is on computer weight/mass/volume tie it all together

A work sheet that can be used before or after the lab to check student understanding.
