PTO and Volunteer Opportunity Descriptions

Koontz Intermediate School

The Executive Committee, Committee Chairs of events and projects, and volunteer school staff and administrators make up the PTO Board of Directors.  A PTO nominating committee recruits the executive committee, which is voted on by the PTO membership.  Job descriptions are available, if you are interested in being on the executive committee next year.  Committee chairs coordinate their specific project/event and are recruited by the PTO president.

The PTO board meets once a month during the school year at a time agreed upon by that year’s executive committee.  The Board administers the PTO finances and plans and oversees PTO goals, projects and events.  ALL parents are welcome at any monthly meetings although only the Executive Committee and Committee Chairs are allowed to vote.

The Goals of the PTO for 2015-2016:

  1. Promote greater parent and teacher involvement in school activities and events.

  2. Raise enough funds in order to meet the needs for supplies, special programs and extra school activities that enrich the students’ learning environment.

  3. Encourage volunteerism at Koontz Intermediate School.
Parent Volunteer Opportunities/Descriptions:
1. Box Tops for Education- volunteers would assist in clipping and collecting box top coupons. The collection times occur once in the fall and early spring.

2. Faculty Basketball Game- volunteers would assist in selling tickets and concessions for the after school basketball game between Koontz faculty members. This event is held in the spring.

3. Fifth Grade Dance- volunteers would assist in coordination and execution of an after school dance for the fifth grade. This event is held late winter/early spring.

4. Fun Food Nights- assist at local restaurants several times a year to gather our community and raise funds for our school.

5. Fundraising- to assist in the fall fundraising event “The Challenge…Give Me 60”. These volunteers would assist in money collection and the associated Kickball Tournament.

6. Health Fair- to assist with various health related screenings for our 5th grade students. This event is held in the fall.

7. Heritage Night- to assist Koontz in tradition of celebrating students’ and family cultures through food, activities, and a display of student projects.

8. Hospitality- several times during the school year, the PTO hosts an event (i.e. teacher appreciation luncheon, etc…) that requires baked goods or other refreshments. Volunteers can sign-up to help provide these goodies and work the events.

9. Mentor Program- this program partners adults and students to spend time together at the school. Mentors provide support by talking and interacting with students.

10. Sixth Grade Dance- assist in coordination and execution of an after school dance for our 6th grade students. This event is held in late winter/early spring.

11. “One Time Projects”- There are several times during the school year when volunteers are needed for “One Time” Projects. As the PTO receives requests from staff or PTO committees for volunteers, they call parents that have checked this option and may be available for a short, one-time task -- such as picture day.
