Congratulations, DeLana Parker, 2019-20 Teacher of the Year!

This is my 16th year teaching and my 7th year in sixth grade. I have also taught 3rd and 4th grades.  In addition, I teach writing, GRE and SAT test prep, and substitute teaching classes at UNCA. I have a Masters Degree in Education and a Bachelors in Psychology and I have earned my Global Educator Digital Badge. I have been the advisor for National Junior Honor Society for 5 years. I have completed racial equity training and I have organized the Equity Team for our school. I am passionate about giving students a voice so I have started a student blog called “Listen to Me!” and I am also working on writing a book about the same topic. I am currently pursuing my National Boards. I am part of the Social Studies Leadership Team, the school Lighthouse Team, and the Diversity Team for the county. I love bugs and all kinds of creepy crawlies and I share that love with my Bug Club!
In my personal life, I have a wonderful husband and a beautiful 20 year old daughter who has made me appreciate the fascinating world of Aspergers and she never ceases to amaze me. I have a 12 year old cocker spaniel and my family and I have unintentionally become the cat rescue of our neighborhood, saving and caring for close to 40 cats. In any free time I can find, I love to read and be outside. Growing up, I always thought I would be a veterinarian, but I am so happy my path led me to teaching because I love what I do. I am honored to be nominated for Teacher of the Year and honored to work at Koontz with people who do such great things for kids.
