English Language Arts Curriculum

ELA Syllabus


We are so glad that you are here at Koontz with us! This is going to be a great year filled with fun and learning all at the same time! Here is an overview of what you can expect to see from English Language Arts (ELA) this year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.


ELA Curriculum:  EL Education

The EL Curriculum combines rigorous, standards-aligned content with effective instructional practice, bringing together the “what” and “how” of Common Core Success. It integrates reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills applicable to 5th Grade Common Core Standards.


  • Teacher Directed Reading (TDR) - This portion of the day is where students read and analyze grade-level text using a variety of skills to meet our grade-level standards.   We will be utilizing the EL Education curriculum. 


Reader’s Workshop


  • Reading Groups- As a part of our balanced literacy program, this portion of the day is when the students are put into leveled reading groups to work on specific skills together. The students are reading small group books, answering questions, and having conversations about their reading as they go.


  • Independent Reading – This is a portion of each day where the students are reading a book of their choice that is on their level. The classroom library contains books that have already been labeled with the reading level for the students to access so they will have a chance to pick a book that interests them. Students may also select a book from the Media Center and look up the level to see if they can read it for SSR. After they have given the book a fair chance, they are allowed to ‘abandon’ and choose a new one as they wish.  (An online resource for determining book levels is www.scholastic.com/bookwizard)


*Benchmark Testing – This assessment tool was developed by Fountas and Pinnell to help teachers and students alike learn from each other and grow together. With the students in mind, this assessment is done a minimum of three times throughout the year. Students will read aloud a short story, read silently, and then answer comprehension questions to determine the understanding of the reading material. This tool allows for the teacher to assess which reading level is the best fit for each student.  Each book has an assigned reading level from A to Z. The goal for the end of 5th grade is to be reading at a level of “V”. We know that all children learn differently and at different paces, but this tool will help us get each child to surpass his/her individual reading goal.









Grading Scale

We use the new 10 point grading scale here at Koontz.

100 - 90 = A               89- 80 = B                  79 - 70 = C                 69 - 60 = D                Below 60 = F


Grade Percentages

Homework = 10%                  Classwork = 20%                   Quizzes = 30%           Assessments = 40%                         

Late Work

  • Work missed due to absences, tardies, etc. are NOT considered late work. Students will have 3 days to make up assignments due to these situations.
  • Work that is not turned in on time will have 10 points taken off. After the assignment is 1 week late, the student will only receive half credit.
  • Other situations will be discussed on an individual basis.



  • When homework is assigned, it will be essential for the next day’s curriculum discussion and common core lesson structure. Please make sure this is completed in a timely manner so that students are prepared for class. Every effort needs to be made to make sure this is completed. Please check your teacher’s website for nightly homework assignments.
