Teacher Bio
I am originally from Catawba County, NC and graduated from Appalachian State University with a B.S in Special Education in 2004. I began my teaching career in Gaithersburg, MD where I co-taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes. I then moved into a self-contained SED (Severe Emotional Disturbance) classroom with 8 young men from 12-15 years old. There I developed a passion for teaching and mentoring children with disabilities, trauma, and mental illness. I moved to Asheville in 2015 with my husband, Paul, and my (now) thirteen year old daughter, Madalyn. We share our home in Leicester with our two cats and two dogs. This is my fifth year as an EC teacher at Koontz Intermediate, mostly co-teaching in regular education classrooms. Over the past 5 years, I've also taught pullout classes for reading, math, social/emotional, and organizational skills. I currently serve as the EC representative for the PBIS committee and the Lighthouse Team. Everyday, I strive to make a positive impact on the students I teach and to provide support to my fellow teachers. Lastly, I feel so incredibly lucky to get to work with the amazing administrators and teachers at Koontz, and can't imagine being anywhere else.
