Drama Wordle

"I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being." - Oscar Wilde.

About Me....

Hi

Julia (Julie) Wharton

Julie in NYC

Hello! I am excited about my second year at Koontz with all the many challenges and opportunities this year may present.
I have 15 years of full time theatre teaching experience. I have taught theatre in two different public schools in Fairfax County, VA, two different American International Schools (Zimbabwe and Guatemala) and one Cambridge International private school. My diplomat husband and I  have lived in Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Guatemala, South Africa and Zimbabwe and moved to Asheville almost three years ago. I am a very proud mom to three adult 'kids', I love to hike, horseback ride, and read on the beach, and I speak Spanish.

In addition to teaching, I adore directing and have directed 40+ productions. Recent productions include 'Little Women' at Asheville Community Theatre (which ended up being a virtual performance at the end of May 2020!)  and 'A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder at Parkway Playhouse. As we all know, our Koontz production of 'The Lion King' was postponed due to our pandemic shutdown, so I can't yet say I have a Koontz Musical under my belt.

I believe theatre education is an effective AND FUN way to develop vitally important 21st Century skills. My goal is not to train stars of stage and screen (though some may choose to pursue that!) but to challenge students in ways that help them become creative problem solvers, critical thinkers, confident communicators, cooperative team workers, wise risk takers, empathetic citizens and more. I work hard to manage a positive process while guiding students towards outstanding outcomes.

The parents, students, teachers and administration of any school working together as a community achieve the best results. I am always happy to hear from parents - please don't hesitate to email me with questions, concerns, information or kudos!  I do my best to answer emails as quickly as possible. Email Mrs. Wharton
