5th Grade Math Syllabus

We are excited to have all of you here at Koontz! This is going to be a great year filled with fun and learning all at the same time! This information is provided as a summary of our math and science expectations for our students. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Math
The mathematics curriculum is organized into five strands: (1) Operations & Algebraic Thinking; (2) Number & Operations in Base Ten; (3) Number & Operations  Fractions; (4) Measurement & Data (includes volume) and, (5) Geometry. Problemsolving strategies are embedded into each of the 5 strands. We also integrate the eight (8) “Standards for Mathematical Practices” which will be pasted in your student’s math journal.
Grade five is a pivotal year. It is a culmination and synthesis of what has come before in grades K through 4 and a transition to the greater independence and responsibilities students need to exhibit in middle grades.
Math Journal

Students will be responsible for taking notes in their journal during math class for each lesson. These notes will include examples of a variety of strategies used to solve math equations, vocabulary for each unit and numerous examples to use as a resource during homework time.

Math journals are expected to be taken home to reference while doing homework assignments.

Learning Targets will be posted for each math lesson that reflect what the student is expected to do during instruction.

Math journals are expected to be neat, thorough, and organized.

It is the student’s responsibility to make up any notes that are missed during an absence. This can be accomplished between 7:30 am and 7:45 am or after school.
Math Classwork
Homework

Math homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. Students should complete assignments to the best of their ability and show their “thinking” and work in order to be prepared for class the following day. The student’s “thinking” should show all math work for each assigned task.

Often, students will need to include written explanations using math vocabulary and correct sentence structure.

If additional notebook paper is used, the student should place that paper in their workbook in order to have it available in class the following day. We encourage students to always try to complete their assignments on their own, using the math journal as a reference, and obtain guidance from parents if necessary.

Homework is a continuation of the day’s classwork. This work allows students to practice skills, and provides information to assess the student’s level of understanding/proficiency.
Math Assessments

Units will be divided into sessions. At the end of each session, there will be a quiz tested on that particular skill. A unit test will be given at the end of each unit to assess student proficiency.

County mandated rubrics that correlate with the state’s standards are used to score each unit test.

Additional quizzes and/or tests will be given based on student performance. The information from these will be used to determine students’ understanding of the concepts and if additional instruction or enrichment is needed.

Classroom Rules

Keep their hands, feet and objects to themselves.

Respect other people and their property.

Refrain from inappropriate/negative comments and actions.

Are in their seats prepared with assignments completed and ready to work.

Make Good Choices at all times.

Refer to the Koontz IntermediateTiered Behavior Grid for additional information.

Leader Cards are awarded each 9 weeks for Academics, Attitude and Attendance. Students will need 6 points to participate in the “celebration” at the end of each grading period.
